The Sims’ Worth Of Being Mobilised Lives On In The Sims Mobile

Sul sul once again, fellow gamers! One month ago, The Sims Mobile eventually became a worldwide life-simulating freebie after settling in Brazil, Spain and Australia [12]. Many simmers who got into it must have enjoyed partying at those splendid parties, buying new clothes for their sims, witnessing a small variety of relationships and watching the results of a risky action during an event [2] [12]. And yes, during one of the special events in the market square, they got to listen to an awesome simlish rock song. It is an example of a passable spin-off of The Sims franchise with convincing graphics and precise life-simulation gameplay [2]. The Sims Mobile, the supposed lovechild of The Sims Social and The Sims FreePlay has shown us how The Sims for mobile devices has evolved since the port of The Sims 2 for 2G and 3G mobile phones from 2006 [5] [11].

A sim can eventually retire once the player’s experience reaches Level 16 [2]. The best time to retire a sim would be if a simmer gets tired of the option to do so being occasionally shoved in their face. Once a sim is ready to retire and no longer be playable after becoming an elder, he or she will leave a glorious box behind [2]. While it is heart-breaking to no longer be able to play as a sim who retired, at least enabling the retirement at any time will reward the player with an Heirloom that was in the box. If a simmer suddenly regrets retiring their beloved sim, the replacement can always be a clone of the retired sim instead of a fully grown offspring. Repeating the cycle can help the player expand their MySims character cameo collection, along with the variety of personality traits that the next playable sims can have [2]. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Holy smokes Ratticator! A box that contains an Heirloom can be given to the player if an elderly sim passes away in the eariler version of The Sims Mobile [6]. If an elderly sim’s life has not really been that fulfilling, he or she would simply shrug it off and move on in a cheery deposition, compared to how an elderly sim will desperately try and turn the Grim Reaper’s hourglass when their time is up and their aspiration meter is low in The Sims 2. Letting an elderly sim pass away in The Sims Mobile would at least add to the form of realism that The Sims has progressed since the Sims 2 era [6] [8]. Perhaps in a future update, there could be another way of earning Heirlooms that can make the progress of catching them all slightly more progressive, especially for those who would like to see how many MySims characters are in the app as cool cameos. Looks like the Grim Reaper will always be essential in The Sims, whether he did woohoo with another sim or not [8] [9].

If an elderly sim’s life has been fantastically fulfilling, the best character development of the Grim Reaper will be shown in an earlier version of the app. [6]

The way of earning an Heirloom might have been changed in a previous update of the app, which is why my elderly sims are still alive, unless there will eventually be a sign of their upcoming deaths in the current version. [2]
Again, trying to complete any of the twenty-nine stories is rather time-consuming. Despite this, at least a story’s progress that has been completed by a retired sim shall remain completed, even if a new sim within the new generation is repeating it as they follow the retired sim’s footsteps [2]. The green closed book icon that indicates a completed story is further proof and stays there after the next generation of sims arrives of the small form of challenge being at least fair for our fellow simmers. Maybe in a future update, there might be a new unique hobby, career or relationship story that will keep the aspect of developing a story fresh. There will always be a chance to fully complete a story, as long as the player allows the generation cycle to gradually continue in The Sims Mobile, even though the option to make a playable sim grow into a non-playable elder is optional.

One of the relationship chapters was completed by the previous generation of my sims before they retired. [2]
If you thought the price for a third playable sim was too big, the price for a fourth playable sim is even more outrageous [2]. 515 Simcash dollars! Despite the more expensive price for a fourth household member, it should not be a big deal for those who are okay with only playing as two sims and those who have waited long enough to get 175 Simcash dollars without spending any real-life currency for a third playable sim. The earned SimCash can always be spent on rushing events, household items, and stylish clothes if a player does not want to go through another period of patience that would be even longer. Alternatively, there’s always the option to get enough SimCash more efficiently by paying with real-life credit. In the United Kingdom, £9.99 for 600 Simcash dollars is a pretty decent deal [2]. Ultimately, it is up to the player if they would like more than two sims in their household.

515 Simcash dollars for a fourth playable sim. Really? [2]
Aside from the Freezer Bunny and the Social Bunny from the main Sims games [7] [10], there are cute pink bunny stickers that expand on The Sims Mobile’s cred [2]. Believe it or not, giving a sticker to at least three sims with a blue plumbob above each of them is on every single daily to do list. At least it would be worth it for two Fashion Gems if a simmer would like a new quirky clothing item from Izzy. Giving out stickers to other sims seems to be another sign of the app’s individuality, as well as a sign of the Freezer Bunny’s legacy [7]. New bunny stickers with different expressions and attire will come out about every week or so, which might make some simmers think that they could be the Sims equivalent of emojis [2]. The quirky stickers that resemble cute pink rabbits with a variety of expressions and attire might perk up the simmers who got annoyed at their furniture suddenly breaking.

Here you go, sweetcheeks. Have a bunny sticker! [2]
The app may still occasionally show off some goofs, such as a smartphone being stuck to a sim’s hand [2]. At least the bodies of the sims in a hot tub do not stretch across the household in my data anymore. That glitch might not have been good news for some people with photosensitive epilepsy. There are some moments when the two sims who are actually in a romantic relationship will actually woohoo together. Aside from the annoying hot tub time glitch being officially wiped out, one time in my data, the second generation’s toddler was completely invisible while being babysat by my third playable sim. The cute little rascal must have been pretending to be a friendly ghost or something. With hope and diligence, the developers of the app can ensure that the game will remain less glitchy for our fellow simmers. But nevertheless, since only a few silly glitches do not make a game unplayable, the gameplay remains untainted [2].

An invisible toddler being babysat by a third playable sim. [2]
A perfect woohoo scene, Much better than the boring standing up woohoo in The Sims FreePlay. [2]
Overall, for the rest of 2018, plenty of our fellow simmers may still go with the non-linear flow in the newest spin-off of The Sims. With the option to link the data with a Facebook account and check out the sims created by Facebook friends, The Sims Mobile is sure to be known as the spiritual successor of The Sims Social. Some mobile gamers out there might be thinking that The Sims FreePlay is so last lustrum, but it still seems quite relevant for its players with update after update, along with a new logo that replaced that original one in 2015 [1] [3] [4]. The same may apply for The Sims Mobile a few years later, as long as there will be updates that will add slight improvements and new aspects in order to prevent the app’s legacy from going stale. Dag dag…until I write again, gamers.

And this concludes another article. [2]

The Sims Mobile: A Pink Plumbob In Every Event

Sul sul, simmers! In May 2017, the launch trailer for The Sims Mobile was revealed [7] [11]. The app’s title is pretty simplistic, but a lot of potential was present at the time the trailer was revealed [7] [11]. Later in 2017, the app was available to be downloaded for free onto iOS and Android devices in Australia, Brazil and Spain [16]. In March 2018, it was finally available worldwide [16]. Some simmers could say it would be the offspring of The Sims Social and The Sims FreePlay. Since it has been almost a month that the newest spin-off of the successful franchise has gained much more attention, let us elaborate on how it is a very passable spin-off, especially for the current generation of gaming.

The Sims Mobile logo. [16]

What lovely graphics! I managed to make my female sim’s facial structures adorably elegant and her body healthily slim, thanks to the way they can be freely altered with the mechanic that originated from The Sims 4 [5]. It was rather easy to carefully position each facial feature and customize the body by dragging the little white circles in each customization section, which once again shows how advanced the customization of a sim has been since The Sims 2 [3]. And not to mention that the renders of town’s environment and facilities are colourful and convincing. Since The Sims Mobile is technically part of the Sims 4 era, which began in the second half of 2014, the graphics seem to match today’s expectations of mobile game graphics [2].

An example of how a sim's body can be altered in The Sims Mobile. [2]
An example of how a part of a sim's face can be altered in The Sims Mobile. [2]
The user interface within the main gameplay is exceptional for another casual spin-off of The Sims series for modern mobile devices [2]. It is mostly about tapping on another sim or object, scrolling through a list of actions by dragging a fingertip up and down the screen and simply tapping the desired action. The camera controls are very useful as their methods are:
  • Simply dragging a fingertip across the screen outside the action selections to move the camera to a different area in each location.
  • Spreading two fingertips away from each other to zoom in.
  • Bringing two fingertips closer to each other to zoom out.
  • Swiping with one fingertip while another fingertip is settling on the screen to rotate the camera.
The useful camera controls are comparable to the camera controls in The Sims FreePlay, so the developers at Maxis still know their stuff [1]. Kudos to them. Lastly, at least the playable sims will not throw up after the player makes the device twice in The Sims Mobile [1]. Keep tapping and scrolling away, fellow simmers.

The camera can be positioned by the power of a simmer’s fingertips. [2]
The player can scroll through a sim’s stories, relationships, etc. by swiping left and right or up and down. [2]
The gameplay is also suitable for the app’s concept [2]. Very similar to how a simmer makes sims perform tasks in The Sims FreePlay, a simmer can just tap an action after tapping on an interactive object or another sim [1]. Compared to how some actions in The Sims FreePlay are more time consuming than others actions that only take about five or ten seconds to be done would be much preferred in both The Sims FreePlay and The Sims Mobile [1] [2]. Oddly enough, playable sims do not seem to rely on the player fulfilling their motives as much as they would in many other spin-offs of The Sims. Despite this, the overall outcome of the app has pretty much nailed what made The Sims memorable for making the player feel like a god or goddess, including the option to buy new stuff for a house [2].

An example of a selection of actions would be a list of ways to interact with another sim. [2]
The player can begin events in order to develop a playable sim’s life, quite comparable to how a celebrity can gain more fans by participating in photo shoots and parties in Kim Kardashian Hollywood [8]. One aspect of trying to complete an event that gives The Sims Mobile some individuality, other than a pretty pink plumbob would be the occasional chance event. It may be humourous to see an epic fail, but a successful attempt will increase the number of pink stars that will fill up the progress bar. In addition to how the sim’s motives not being much as a big deal in the app, it is more about a sim’s energy when it comes to completing any event. This aspect of the gameplay is comparable to how energy is spent in The Sims Social [17]. When the energy bar runs out in The Sims Mobile, the player can give the sim a cupcake to top it up. Who can resist those cupcakes, like the ones in The Sims FreePlay [1] [12]?

A stumble will result in less pink stars. [2]
Completing events, along with doing the Daily To Do List will reward the player with experience points. Getting enough will result in leveling up and unlocking more features, which makes The Sims Mobile quite a rewarding spin-off. [2]
Here we go again with helping friendships, romance and rivalries develop [2]. When the first relationship event is completed after an introduction, the player can choose the relationship story. What makes this feature very interesting is the variety of friendship stories.
The unique friendship stories that a playable sim can star in with another sim are:
  • BBFs Forever
  • Raincheck, Please
  • Two Peas in an Odd Pod
  • Geek Speak
  • Sports Buddies
  • Art Aficionados
  • Soundtrack of Soul
  • Misery Loves Company

The dramatic rivalries that two sims can have are:
  • Frenemies
  • Old Rivals
  • Arch-Nemeses

The unconditional love stories available are:
  • More Than Friends With Benefits
  • A Missed Connection
  • Secret Crush
  • The Fixer-upper
  • Tainted Love
  • Soulmates
Trying to complete the whole progress of the relationship with another sim will, unfortunately, turn out to be quite time-consuming [2]. On a positive note, it seems quite rewarding how the player can receive new clothing items for completing a relationship story. Additionally, the length of each relationship progress would at least make the small form of challenge of trying to complete it stick around.

Some examples of relationship stories. One of most interesting ones would be a friendship that is involved with music. [2]
Ready to work hard and show them what you can do? A playable sim’s job can be any of the seven choices:
  • A barista
  • A chef
  • A doctor
  • An administrator
  • A fashion designer
  • A DJ
  • A judge
In addition to a sim’s career, his or her hobby can be:
  • Writing
  • Cooking
  • Playing the guitar
  • Playing the piano
  • Yoga
After a sim gets a different job, the progress of the chapter of having the previous career will automatically be saved, thus making the gameplay fair for a simmer who wants to make their sim try different things [2]. The same feature applies to a sim’s hobby. After all, trying to reach 100% Complete in a career or hobby or relationship story will also be rather time-consuming. Perhaps in an update for the app, there could be a new location that could hold another workplace for a whole new career.

The Barista career story seem like the shortest one is it only has four chapters. [2]
It is slightly disappointing to only be able to play with two sims, but at least it is lovely how two sims in the household who love each other can get married, then have an adorable baby or two [2]. After their infant stages, the two offsprings in my household are automatically controlled by rather basic artificial intelligence, which makes them simply walk around the house and sometimes sleep in beds. In addition to how simplistic the artificial intelligence is, it is cool how they can occasionally talk to each other. Once they grew into young adults, they seemed to be way more sociable with each other. If only the price for another playable sim was…well…somewhat less than 175 SimCash dollars. Nevertheless, the player who wishes to have another sim in the household can patiently earn more SimCash by levelling up, completing certain quests and watching a mobile app advert (which only happens by luck).

Two children having a chat under the influence of AI. [2]

One of the options to do in order to have a third playable sim in the house would be spending 175 SimCash dollars. [2]
Remember a fully grown Bella Goth making her grand return in The Sims Social before it was terminated in 2013 [13] [17]? Well, in The Sims Mobile, she has once again delightfully returned with some notable differences. She will greet the first playable sim in a cute red jumper and denim jeans, which is quite refreshing since she would usually be seen in a fabulous strapless red dress. For some odd reason, her eyes are green instead of brown. Like in The Sims Social before it got shut down, there’s no sign of Bella’s husband Mortimer in The Sims Mobile [2] [17]. Could this reincarnation of Bella be the Bella from The Sims Social trying to move on from her life in Littlehaven [17]? Or could she be a completely different Bella who sadly got divorced from Mortimer? Green eyes and red strapless dress or not, we still love the elegant lady who has been around since 2000, don’t we simmers [13]?

Bella Goth’s appearance in The Sims Mobile is quite different compared to her appearances in many other The Sims instalments. [2]
Behold, the Gok Wan of the Sims franchise. In the latest version of The Sims Mobile, the quirky pink-haired guy named “Izzy” can design new clothing items for the playable sims [2]. Quite unfortunately, the designing of the clothing items is all in his hands, making the results rather surprising. The aspect of a creation made by Izzy that makes it special us how it can boost a trait. It can especially work for any of the playable sim’s traits that have been chosen by the player as the experience with the app progressed. Izzy seems like an employable fellow and 20 fashion gems for a special clothing item that sparkles is a pretty good deal, aside from how his service is quite similar to a slot machine at a casino.

Yes you have, Izzy. By the way, nice hairdo. [2]
Who never knew that some of the characters from the MySims series would make cool cameos? They are seen in the app as little colourful charms within the Heirlooms selection [2]. It is another cool way to give a little shout-out to the loveable variety of quirky characters from the MySims series since the Sims 4 interpretations of Travis Scott, Liberty Lee, Summer Holiday and DJ Candy “Supergroove” [14] [15]. The charms can unlock traits and levels of traits for the playable sims. They can be bought for a certain amount of Heirloom Tickets, which are a type of ticket that can be earned by completing an event or watching an advert. I would really like a charm that would prevent the darn furniture in the household from breaking!

Carl’s Mean Charm costs 40 regular Heirloom Tickets while Elmira’s Silver Benevolence Charm costs 40 Super Heirloom Tickets. [2]
There are a few silly little glitches that I have discovered during my experience with the app [2]. One of them was during a romantic event between my two playable sims. Sometimes, instead of his tainted lover, my male sim would woohoo with one of his friends. Oh, don’t get me started with an expansion on that glitch that occurred after the latest update, which is…well…one of the images below will explain it. Another amusing glitch would be how a child sim’s body would stretch out in quite a surreal way during a chance event at the house. And let’s not forget the moment when my female sim had her smartphone stuck in her hand while she was watching her partner play the guitar. Hopefully, the crazy glitch that occurs when two sims hop into a hot tub, along with the other goofs will be patched after the app’s developers at Maxis call the Glitchbusters in the near future.

Kids sure grow up fast. [2]

WHAT THE HECK?! [2]

When you’re playing a game, and you see a flaw, who ya gonna call? Glitchbusters! [2]
A simmer can enter another simmer’s friend code in order to be in touch with that simmer, like how an animal crosser can enter another animal crosser’s ID code in a similar manner in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp [9]. Comparable to how Miitomo users can link their Miitomo data to their Facebook accounts [10], a simmer can link their The Sims Mobile data to their Twitter and Facebook accounts [2]. The ability to link the data of a modern mobile app to a precious social media account makes the progress of finding friends somewhat more efficient. And don’t forget that you can connect to EA and Game Center to find friends in The Sims Mobile as well. And last but not least, simmers can also go to a party hosted by any simmer around the globe [2].

A simmer can send another simmer a friend code. Shhhhh! Let’s keep our codes just between us, okay? [2]

Other ways to find more fellow simmers in The Sims Mobile. [2]
In conclusion, The Sims Mobile has plenty to offer, especially in its later versions [2]. It remains loyal to what made The Sims the very well-loved life-simulation we have known almost two decades by featuring customization of playable sims and evolution/devolution of relationships. It may not be as advanced as The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 [4] [5], but it can still be acclaimed for being the somewhat spiritual successor of The Sims Social for how seasonal events occur for a limited time only [2] [17], such as the Spring Egg Hunt. Aside from that, the unique relationship stories and the ability to start events give The Sims Mobile some individuality, making it a somewhat refreshing spin-off of one of the best-selling computer game series of all time. I would recommend the app to anyone who is a fan of The Sims franchise and a casual mobile gamer. Dag dag for now, simmers!

What a dreamboat he is! [2]
