The Racing Goes On In Mario Kart Tour

Nearly a year ago, I downloaded Mario Kart Tour on my smartphone and elaborated on what I enjoyed about the experience that marked the first time Mario and the crew raced outside of a Nintendo console or handheld [32] [33] [34] [35]. Since March 2020, Version Two helped the app maintain its cred for those Nintendo nerds who became rather hooked on it [14] [27], despite the negative feedback Version One received mostly for its questionably greedy deals [29] [40]. Looking at the reception the app has received [26], I would say that Mario Kart Tour is like Marmite. You either love it or hate it [1] [20] [28]. Have no fear because I have not spent a penny on the microtransactions and just spent five rubies on a pipe when I felt like it. Despite the negative side of the reception’s spectrum, I will always be a fan of the Mario Kart series [30] [31], especially when it comes to racing as my homegirl, Princess Peach [10] [13] [14] [15]. Moreover, fasten your seatbelt and do not step on the gas pedal for too long because we are about to zoom through a few updates on Mario Kart Tour in its second version in association with wishing the Super Mario franchise a happy 35th anniversary [5] [16].
Here is the new title screen for Mario Kart Tour in 2020. [14]
Oh. And did mention I love this Peach badge? [14]
Well, it looks like there is finally a real multiplayer mode after we have only witnessed opponents being controlled by artificial intelligence with usernames tacked onto them [17]. A player can also type in a room code if they wish to only play with those nearby in their local area [14], similar to how a contestant can enter a code for a game of Quiplash or Quiplash 2 [6] [7]. Alternatively and quite more ambitiously, there is also the option to race against actual players around the world, either in a standard race or a gold race that requires a gold pass to compete in. As someone who has not purchased one, I can see how it can increase the reward system by providing gold badges to earn and provide another challenge with the difficulty of 200cc [10] [11] [12] [14]. I am delighted to witness my opponents racing under the genuine influence of other Nintendo nerds. However, if there are any signs of one of them being a hacker that cheats in a race, bringing back unnerving memories of hackers in online races of Mario Kart Wii [4], bring on the blue shells in the name of karma! No gold passes for them!
Three ways to finally play Mario Kart Tour with other Nintendo nerds: locally, standard worldwide and worldwide with a gold pass. [14]
Here is one of my moments of finally playing the game with other racers rather than CPUs, but with another new feature… [14]
Another new feature that increases the appeal of Mario Kart Tour for some Nintendo nerds is the option to play it whilst holding the device horizontally [14] [18]. I like how the new Landscape mode shows more of the course being raced on and can make the experience feel more like a handheld game, quite similar to Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed for iOS and Android [21] [22] [36] [37]. However, I will admit that the Landscape mode was quite difficult for me to get used to, considering how I got very used to playing the game in its standard mode [14]. It felt quite awkward to swipe one thumb across the side of my screen whilst holding my other thumb down to drift. Nevertheless, enabling Smart Steering and Steer/Drift Button Display for the Landscape mode made it feel quite like my experience with Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing for iOS [22]. If some players prefer the standard ways of playing the game vertically, good for them. Playing Mario Kart Tour horizontally may sort of feel like playing Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7 once the Landscape mode without Steer/Drift Button Display starts to get comfortable to get used to [10] [13].
I remained a little unsure about Landscape mode before I activated Smart Steering. I am quite glad I got at least some feeling of playing Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing on my iPod Touch back in those good old days. I can say that was somewhat predicted in my first article about Mario Kart Tour [31] [32]. [14]
I also like how there is option to quickly change the mode to Portrait/Landscape mode just in case a new player may not get used to one mode and hopes to quickly switch to the other whilst focusing completely on the race. As long as the variety of alternations is present [32] [33], Mario Kart Tour can still appeal to its crowd. [14]
The cups in the newer tours do not need to be unlocked, compared to the first few tours back in late 2019 [32] [33] [34] [35]. Even though a form of challenge with a familiar task of unlocking new cups by completing the first one is now absent, the option to try out any race or challenge from any cup makes the experience excitingly non-linear and gives the player more freedom [14]. The tour gifts still need to be unlocked with certain amounts of stars from racing though. For only twenty-four hours, the icon of a cup will be highlighted in gold to show that its courses will give extra coins after racing, which can potentially motivate a player who wants to save coins for buying a new racer, kart or glider from the shop. There is also now a progress bar beneath each task in the lists of challenges, which is useful for the player to know how much more of the task they need to do to receive another badge. Besides eliminating glitches after calling the Glitchbusters [38] [39], many changes with a mobile game’s update can be useful or at least interesting, including specific changes in Mario Kart Tour’s 2020 updates [14].
A fellow Mario Kart racer can now play any of the cups at the beginning of a new tour. [14]
Some progress bars are now visible to help the player know much they need to do left to earn more stars. [14]
Throughout the tours, the lists of unlockables in Mario Kart Tour just keeps getting bigger in the name of cultural cred and familiar aspects [14] [25]. I would also like to make a list of my favourite outfits worn by certain characters throughout the tours, including:
  •        Rosalina’s beach dress
  •        Peach’s vacation outfit
  •        Pauline’s party dress
  •        Mario’s musician suit
  •        Rosalina’s aurora dress
My favourite karts are:
  •       White Royale
  •       Glided Prancer
  •       Daytripper
  •       Rose Queen
My favourite gliders include:
  •       Blizzard Parasol
  •       Butterfly Sunset
  •       Pink Flower Glider
It is amazing and ambitious how the roster of racers, including clones of them in outfits that suit the theme of a tour, would continue to increase the game’s overall appeal to a large crowd of mobile gamers and Nintendo nerds with different interests if it was not for the very little chances to get a desired one [14]. I may not have unlocked much of my favourites, but I can always gaze at images of them [25]. Furthermore, some Nintendo nerds may be curious about what will be new in the next tours while some toy collectors are looking forward to being cuted out by the third series of Kitten Catfe this Autumn [8] [9].
Rosalina looks absolutely stunning in her Aurora outfit! [14]
And the blizzard parasol is beautiful! [14]
With a new option to play the game in a landscape view and a proper multiplayer mode [17] [18], I say that Mario Kart Tour might have further increased its cred to some degrees in 2020, even though some players must have stopped playing it for a while due to the disappointment of the chances of getting a high-end racer, kart or glider being too low [14]. I can say that the ongoing service for the app from Nintendo might have a coping mechanism during the first few weeks of lockdowns that were established to prevent the coronavirus outbreak from spreading any further [3]. While some doll collectors out there are delighted by the colours of the dolls within the first Rainbow High line and plenty of Sonic supporters are getting into the spirit of the Olympics by playing Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 on their iOS and Android devices [2] [19] [23] [24], plenty of Nintendo nerds out there are still racing in Mario Kart Tour, possibly without spending a penny on any microtransactions. Have I been too optimistic about playing the app or can you tolerate it as much as I can? Let me know before I launch a blue shell at you!
Just look at Mario and Luigi’s cool outfits on my newest T-shirt! Could they be featured in a new tour of Mario Kart Tour soon? [30]
Strive and ride, Mario Kart Racers! [11]

Mario Kart Tour Is Almost Ready For Race

Remember when another game as part of the Super Mario franchise for third-party mobile devices was announced [13] [18] [19]? From May to June this year, the game was firstly open for beta testing for the developers make sure that the true outcome will be exceptional, based on feedback from the beta testers [13]. Even though I missed out of the testing due to being busy with my other working duties, I still have some high hopes for the aftermath and believe what has been revealed while it was occurring has satisfied enough Mario Kart racers who own an iOS or Android device. The official trailers have been revealed almost a month ago, so I thought I might as well once again express my views on Mario Kart Tour too before it officially comes out [1] [7] [8].
The classic characters behind depictions of iconic cities from around the world. [12]
The “Race Around The World” trailer shows how the player can start up their chosen character’s kart just by holding their fingertip down on the screen [7]. I am honestly not sure how comfortable steering the kart will feel with just one thumb in charge most of the time, but I am sure each method may be dandy once the player gets used to them. I honestly would prefer the game to be displayed horizontally, but as long as many players are okay with how to control the kart and aim to reach the finish line as the game is displayed vertically, I think the outcome should be fine [17]. Additionally, I just hope the game will not cause my iOS device to rumble as intensely and fly right out of my hand like how the phones did in another trailer for the game [8]. I will admit that it was rather assuming to see all of those smartphones escape from their users’ hands and cause mild destruction [8]. Please give me any control method besides the awful way of having to hold your Wii remote vertically and awkwardly press the control pad to aim in Worms: A Space Oddity [17].
I am hoping for the game to be available to be played if the device is held horizontally for an update if this method does not work out for every player. [7]
The trailer for the app on Google Play was pretty hilarious. [1]
As much as I am interested to see that the cups are based on the characters instead of the usual cups from the previous instalments, I am also interested in how refreshing the new courses will seem [13]. The rehash of Waluigi Pinball from Mario Kart DS looks thrilling [7] [8]. I have a feeling that the course with a tower that strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower could be its own adaption of Paris, similar to how the Sly Cooper franchise has its own interpretation the city that is especially romantic in Spring [10]. Furthermore, there also seems to be a course that represents some lovely place in Tokyo. With some courses that feature aspects of iconic cities in real life, it is no wonder the title of the newest Mario Kart installment is “Mario Kart Tour” because going through each course that resembles a famous city will be like a world tour [7] [8]. Or in the case of re-experiencing the main installments, it can feel like a tour through previous courses, from Bowser’s Castle to Rainbow Road [8] [11] [13].
Waluigi Pinball! I missed you!! [5] [8]
I think I know where to spend my next time away with my boyfriend. [8]

Whoa! It looks like Bowser’s shell will be an item for him to hurl at any other racer again. Remember how it was used by Bowser in Mario Kart: Double Dash [8] [14]? Additionally, the adorable pink heart that was also an item in Mario Kart: Double Dash will also return as an item in Mario Kart Tour that will be used by Princess Peach and Princess Daisy and Wendy O. Koopa [8] [13] [14]. Other examples of items that will be only used by certain characters as “special items” are:
  •  The triple mushrooms (used by Toad and Toadette) [8] [13]
  •  The Yoshi egg (used by Yoshi) [8] [13]
  •  The double bob-ombs (used by Wario, Waluigi and King Boo) [13]
  •  The giant banana (used by Donkey Kong) [8] [13]

An aspect of Mario Kart: Double Dash returning is sure to warm the hearts of plenty of 2000s kids [14]. I am not sure if the first-person driving feature will ever return unless it might in an update for the app [3].
Bowser’s koopa shell in action. Wait! How many does he own exactly?! [8]
The Yoshi egg’s attack ought to egg-ceptional. Get it? [8]
My stars! We get to see some examples of racers in different outfits. I love how Peach looks in her yukata as it reminds me of the artwork of her wearing that outfit for the Kyoto Cross Media Experience back in 2009 [8] [11]. It is quite strange to see Mario race without his cap, but at least we get to see him in the stylish attires of a jazz musician [8] [12]. Could Luigi receive the same style? Do you think the Shy Guy dressed up as a chef will cook some splendid meals for the racers? I fancy seeing Rosalina racing in her fire outfit from Super Mario 3D World [6]. Or better yet, a fire version of her biker suit from Mario Kart 8 if bikes become available in an update [4]. It seems that the alternative outfits will be unlockable, which can further motivate the player into racing on the tracks and increase the feeling of good rewarding.
Remember this lovely artwork from 2009? [11]
Doesn’t this attire look great on our main man? [12]
Any new unlockable characters? Well, I can see that Peachette, the fusion of Peach and Toadette that debuted in New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe will be a new competitor [] [16]. What about the glamorous and eventually empowered Pauline? As I mentioned in my previous Mario Kart Tour article back in March 2018, I believe that she could also be an unlockable character [18] [19]. It will be quite like how she came a playable tennis player as a reward for participating in an event in Mario Tennis Aces [15].  Could Pink Gold Peach also be unlockable for those who actually liked playing as her in Mario Kart 8 [4]? And yes, I can imagine a fan made mod of the game that features Bowsette, thanks to the artists who made Bowser wearing the crown to be his own Peach a meme a year ago [2]. A big special thanks to them.
Peachette’s kart seems like another shout-out to the good old days of Mario Kart DS. [5] [8]
Mario Kart Tour will park in the application stores on the 25th of September 2019, so we have under a week to prepare for the first Mario Kart installment outside of first-party consoles [1] [7] [8] [13]. I guess I can download it on my iPhone to bring back the feeling I had when I was playing Sonic Dash on my fourth-generation iPod Touch, as well as how I enjoyed playing Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS [3] [5] [9]. Furthermore, I can review it for a third Mario Kart Tour article. What plenty of Mario Kart racers who missed out on the beta testing of the app may hear about:
  • The praise it received for splendid graphics [8] [13]
  • The praise it received for upbeat gameplay [8] [13]
  • The criticism it received for the lack of multiplayer mode [13]
  • The criticism it received for the in-app microtransactions [13]

While we wait for it in under a week, perhaps we can say which racer represents any music genre. Speaking of portraying music genres with the Mario crew, that gives me an idea for another article. Stay tuned, fellow writers and gamers!

My Talking Tom 2 – Not Necessary, But Adorable And Acceptable

Another Talking Tom app?! It appears that this app is the official sequel to My Talking Tom, the generation of the cool cat that was released in very late 2013 [7] [8] [14]. In all honesty, I do not think that My Talking Tom 2 is highly necessary. I believe that Talking Tom 2, the interpretation of Tom that debuted in 2011 was more necessary for the sake the presenting him with a more appealing design and a few more features, such as the beginning of his comedic rivalry with Talking Ben [25] [26]. Nevertheless, witnessing a sequel that seems very unnecessary does not always mean declaring that it will be a completely terrible sequel. As someone who used to upload footage of the original Talking Tom and Talking Tom 2 onto YouTube back in high school, I am a little sad that My Talking Tom and My Talking Angela eventually had the option to record footage of gameplay and save it as a video file removed [3] [5] [15]. Despite that, I shall take a look into the high-pitched kitty’s newest home in My Talking Tom 2.
The app’s logo. [6]
The app basically follows the same premise of looking after Tom [5] [6]. Once again, like a responsible carer, the player can:
  • Pet Tom to make him purr
  • Put Tom to bed (or let him drink energy potion) when he is sleepy
  • Give Tom food bought from the market when he is hungry
  • Let Tom do his business on the toilet
  • Wash Tom with soap when he is filthy
  • Dress Tom in new clothing items
  • Watch Tom grow
And of course, the player can also talk into the device’s microphone and listen to Tom repeat what has been said in a high-pitched voice, which is the very thing that made Tom popular since 2010 [24]. The quality of the player’s words being repeated by Tom is brilliant, but I am sad to say that the option to record footage of Tom is not available as I cannot see a button for doing so. Oh, and he can still be beaten up with pokes. The app’s gameplay is pretty faithful to its predecessor [5] [6]. In addition to the goal of fulfilling Tom’s needs, there are also some new aspects of the casual gameplay to show the app’s purpose of being quite a refreshing sequel.

Hey little guy.  Ready to demonstrate some toilet humour later? [6]
Tom is now living in a home that consists of the new main gameplay features [6]. Tom can now be dragged across the screen, which could be especially fun to do for plenty of young tablet users. The player can put him down gently, slam him onto the ground or stick him onto the ceiling. He can also receive motivation whilst doing a few activates, such as boxing with a punching bag and bouncing on a trampoline. In the new medicine cabinet in the bathroom, there are six methods of making Tom feel better. For example, when he catches a cold, he can be given a spoonful of medical honey. I quite like how the methods of curing Tom’s illnesses enhance the realism of taking good care of a pet or small child. And speaking of the bathroom, I like how there are now seven different soaps to wash Tom with, even though four of them will cost ten coins to use and one will be free to use after an advert plays. With the same solid controls and a small variety of new features for the primary gameplay, I suppose many fans of My Talking Tom were quite impressed.
Before and after little Tommy Wommy eats a spoonful of medical honey. [6]
Aside from the solid controls, I recommended only stroking Tom’s belly when it comes to petting him as stroking his head could result in Tom being dragged in the air. [6]
Tom now has a new friend who is an orange…blob thing with mouse ears named “Squeak” [6]. Squeak can also be dragged across the screen and even squashed by the player’s fingertip. Additionally, he can eat any of Tom’s food and change colours, thus expanding on his character development. I could say that the design of the thing seems slightly unfitting within the current state of the Talking Friends IP, even though there was a menacing antagonist who was named “Jeremy the Germ” and had a similar body shape in two of the Talking Tom And Friends episodes [16] [17]. Even though Talking Hank, another dog was introduced in the first episode of the webisode series [18], I personally felt like he should have had his own app before the release of the episode to make his debut slightly more legitimate. Nonetheless, at least he eventually got his own app in early 2017 [4]. Perhaps there could be an establishment of Tom’s new pets in their own application or web series that may expand on their character developments in the future. Could Tom’s new friend be a sign of an upcoming new era of Talking Friends?

Squeak about to knock Tom’s basketball off his wardrobe in the app’s first trailer. [14]
Squeak turned red after I gave him a chili pepper in the app. [6]

Interestingly, Tom can hop into his plane to fly to a few islands that are based on the themes of the home’s unlockable interior and exterior designs that cost coins and stars [6]. The themes are:
  • A casual home on a street
  • An adventure beach
  • A magic forest from a fairy tale
  • A cyber city with futuristic aspects
  • A candy kingdom
Tom can firstly travel to a tropical island and bring back any one of three bamboo boxes, containing cards for earning food, coins, stars, clothing items household items. The way certain cards can unlock the items as another way to get new furniture and clothing items for the house can prevent the player from losing a bit of patience when it comes to saving coins for a new item. However, the results seem quite random, something results in duplicates of clothing items and the random household items a starter can only receive are adventure beach items. The other three islands will be unlocked as the game progresses, which can also make the player feel rewarded for playing the app daily.

For starters, Tom can only fly to the tropical islands. [6]
An example of a uncompleted card collection. in the app [6]

Wait! There are four other pets to unlock for Tom to be friends with [6]! The player can simply tap the dens in the garden to see Squeak in a selection with a parrot named “Flip” who wears glasses, a purple beast named “Gus”, a robot named “Dot” and a pink blob with a rainbow mane and a unicorn horn and horn named “Sugar”. Looking at the icons next to their names and scrolling through the lists of cards to collect, the player will see that:
  • Flip is from Adventure Beach
  • Gus is from Magic Forest
  • Dot is from Cyber City
  • Sugar is from Candy Kingdom
Despite the pets’ shape, at least Squeak aimed to heal little Tom’s injured paw in the app’s second trailer, unlike Jeremy the Germ who made the fully-grown Tom, Angela, Ginger and Hank ill [12] [16] [17]. And yes, the other four pets can change colour when they eat food. Flip turned orange when I gave him a carrot. It would take some patience, determination and a daily routine to save enough stars for a new pet for Tom.

A yellow Squeak, a green Flip and a pink Sugar. All of the pets seem to have the same character development in the app. [6]
And of course, there is a whole new section of minigames to play as a way to increase Tom’s happiness. These new minigames in My Talking Tom 2 are:
  • Cupid Tom
  • Space Trails
  • Pet Connect
  • Easy Squeezy
  • Ice Smash
  • Super Balloons
  • Totem Blast
After playing them all, I would say that each minigame consists of fairly simple gameplay, yet elements that make them stand out as parts of a small variety. And yes, there are icons that link the player directly to other Talking Friends apps, just like in the original My Talking Tom and My Talking Angela. Recording footage of Tom talking and getting injured for YouTube and Facebook may not be available, but providing a variety of minigames that can relieve stress and have a decent amount of challenge for younger mobile gamers once again makes the sequel faithful to what increased the appeal of Talking Tom.

Some of the minigames and links to other Talking Friends apps. [6]
Let us slightly expand on the minigames, starting with Cupid Tom. Trying to shoot a wheel with a loved one’s face on it with cupid arrows might be a more thrilling challenge in real life. Space Trails brings out a competitive vibe as it requires an internet connection for grabbing the most colourful orbs in the galaxy without bumping into other trails. I feel like Pet Connect is only a rehash of Balloon Splash from My Talking Angela and Rainbows from the original My Talking Tom. Do you wish that you had the power to shrink in order to easily squeeze through narrow spaces like one of Tom’s pet would in Easy Squeezy? I can see that the gameplay of Ice Smash requires a pinch of three-dimensional thinking for eliminating differently coloured blocks by launching blue balls from a canon in the best directions. Inflating balloons and trapping bees between them makes me feel quite…satisfied. Totem Blast is not bad, but it seems too similar to Toy Blast and Toon Blast [2] [20]. I would say that the different gameplay styles are a clear sign of a decent variety of minigames, despite how some of them are not very original.

Well, at least Cupid Tom is not a knife throwing act with Angela as the target. [6]
And at least the way one of the minigames from My Taking Tom that has been recycled is yet another sign of My Talking Tom 2 trying to be a true sequel. [6]

My Talking Tom 2 could be a sign of a new era for Outfit7, despite how rather unnecessary it seems. Little Tommy Wommy looks very cutesy wutesy in a tweaked appearance indeed [6]. Let us compare the kitten in My Talking Tom to the kitten in My Talking Tom 2. Tom in the sequel has brighter irises, a straighter nose, and smoother eyebrows [6]. I can also see that the little Tom in the sequel has a bigger head and a slightly smaller belly. I supposed the graphic designers aimed to make baby Tom cuter for a new crowd of Talking Tom players. I will also admit that the app on my iPad Air tends to be rather laggy at times, which made me speculate that the app could be a little more compatible with newer iOS devices [6]. In addition to my speculation, Sonic Dash would have low frame rate and sometimes crash on my fourth generation iPod Touch, but flow smoothly and refrain from crashing on my iPad Air [10] [11]. With altered features and possibly stronger compatibility with newer mobile devices, Tom seems ready to rock the rest of the late 2010s, along with the early 2020s.
A comparison between the Tom from My Taking Tom and the Tom from My Talking Tom 2. [5] [6]
Looks like the grey cat’s legacy is here to last, possibly for another whole decade. The new gameplay features for the not highly needed, but at least refreshing sequel to My Talking Tom can keep possibly a new line of young Tom fans on their toes. If any of the older fans of Talking Friends prefer sticking to the previous installments of the cool cat for the sake of making videos of him for YouTube, then that is absolutely fine. The Talking Friends universe sure has changed a lot, compared to how it was from 2010 to 2012. As many of us focus on the current era of Talking Friend, I believe that there will be a My Talking Angela 2 next year or two [3]. I would be up for celebrating the high-pitched kitty’s 10th anniversary in 2020. It is crazy to see how he and his life have evolved since the days when he was just standing there in the corner of a street with long black whiskers and dull eyes. Still, it is quite a shame that we do not hear from Roby the Robot, Lila the Fairy, the Johns and the other forgotten Talking Friends anymore [19] [21] [22] [23].

Zzzzzzzzz… [6]
